FIRST FULL-TIME EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR FOR NLFA

Aban Laa began as NLFA’s first full-time Executive Director on December 3.  ++6

Aban was born in Sennar..  He was the 4th of 12 children.  His father is from Malakal, capital of Upper Nile Region.  His father, a Telecommunications Engineer graduated from College in Sudan and got training from UK and France and he spoke he fluent Arabic, English , Collo and moderate French, German, Japanese to enable him to communicate with the instructors.  His mother worked at home.

When Aban was 11 years old, he moved to Wau, Capital of Bhar el Gazal Region.  He graduated from Atabara high school in far northern Sudan it’s main city in River Nile State.  He studied law in Cairo University, Khartoum Branch (now El Nileenain  University).

Aban worked most of his career in Juba, Capital of Equatoria Region.  After graduating in 1993, he practiced law as Attorney under training for a year and then got his license and practiced law.  Two year later (late 1996) he joined Ministry of Justice and Attorney General Chamber and was deployed to the Three Equatoria States and Jonglri State as Legal Counsel and District Attorney handling both civil & criminal cases plus drafting laws & advising all levels of state governments.  In 1998, he joined the Judiciary as a district judge.  He married Jenty Nawal Chacha Laa in 2000, and they have 4 beautiful children.

In late 2002, the family fled the country and resettled in USA..  He worked for 9 years in security and manufacturing jobs.  During 2009-2011, he was employed as Interpreter/Translator and Civil Advisor with the US Army in Iraq.

In 2011, he returned to South Sudan during its Independence preparation and was appointed as Legal Advisor to Council of States in the Upper House of the National Legislature.  He returned to Omaha in 2016 and worked for First Data (later Fiserv) until December, 2020, when he assumed the position of Executive Director of NLFA.

Aban is delighted to be in this new position.  He wants to be helpful to the South Sudanese community, in identifying and creating opportunities  and in assisting community members to make use of these opportunities as we continue to integrate into our lives in the Omaha and the U.S. communities.
